Vietnam’s power sector will explore ways to generate 77.17 billion kWh of electricity in 2008 so as to fuel the country’s increasing power demand, said the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
To make the plan come true, the sector will have to complete underway power projects on schedules.
Turbines 2 and 3 of Tuyen Quang hydropower plant will be operated in January and June, respectively, while turbine 2 of Pleikrong hydropower plant will be put in use in March, and turbine 1 and 2 of A Vuong hydroelectric plant in March and June, respectively.
Moreover, Ban Ve hydropower plant is due for operation in June, Nhon Trach 1 gas-fueled turbine in June, O Mon III gas-fueled turbine 1 and 2 in June and October, respectively, Ca Mau 2 gas-fueled turbine in March, turbine 1 and 3 of Buon Kuop hydropower plant in June and October, correspondingly, and turbines of Son Dong coal-fired power plant in June and December, respectively.
EVN will continue buying power from China, raising the group’s bought electricity amount to over 29 billion kWh while striving to slash power leakage rate.
In 2008, slow development and operation of new power sources and warming climate may trigger an adverse power lack in Vietnam, warned the ministry.
The ministry demanded effective power saving methods while asking the Electricity Regulating Authority of Vietnam (ERAV) to tightly cooperate with relevant agencies, units and enterprises to accelerate reform process of electricity sector to build a market-oriented industry.
Recently, the ministry said that almost 18 power source projects of EVN set for completion from now through 2010 may be three to six months behind schedule due to complicated geology, changeable climate, and sluggish site clearance. (Icon)
