Vinacomin Mulls US$1.6 Bln Bauxite, Limestone Plant in Southern Vietnam
Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) is considering investing US$1.6 billion to build a bauxite and limestone producing factory in southern province of Binh Phuoc, Vietnam News Agency reported.
Vinacomin, the country’s top miner, highly values the province’s limestone huge mines with estimated reserves at 467 million tons in Ta Thiet and Thanh Luong districts.
Binh Duong is home to a large bauxite ore range with estimated reserves of 350 million tons stretching from Bo Bo commune to Dong Nai river and in Duc Bon forest of Bu Dang district, noted a Vinancomin official, seeing this as ideal conditions for the coming plant.
Vietnam’s minerals reserves are estimated at around 224 million tons of metal minerals, including the largest reserve of titan, manganese, lead, zinc, and copper, said governmental statistics.
Vietnam’s bauxite ore reserves are estimated at over eight billion tons, according to statistics of the former Ministry of Industry.
In the 1995-2003 period, the country processed about 300,000-450,000 tons of mineral ores each year. However, from 2003-2004, to feed China’s growing iron mineral demand, output was raised to roughly 1 million tons a year. (VNA)
