Vietnam garment and textile industry has been listed among top ten world exporters, Vietnam News Agency quoted Italia’s Chamber of Commerce of Biella as saying on October 2.

The higher rating is based on the growing number of apparel contracts after Vietnam joined the World Trade Organization and the U.S.’s lifting its quota.

It jumped to the 10th position from 16th in 2006, right after those of the U.S. and Indonesia, the source noted.

In the first nine months, Vietnam shipped US$5.8 billion worth apparels, up 31 per cent on year, surpassing the crude oil sector to become the country’s leading forex earner, said statistics of the Ministry of Finance.

The country is set to gain apparel exports US$7.5 billion this year, up 25 per cent over on year, US$10 billion by 2010 and US$20-22 billion by 2020.

To reduce reliance on imported accessories, Vietnam will need US$7 billion for its development plans for apparel and textile sector from now to 2015, said the Ministry of Industry and Trade. (VNA)
