Vietnam was estimated to have raked in around US$9.5 billion worth agricultural, forestry and seafood exports in the past nine months, according to latest report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

The report showed that coffee took the lead among farm produces. Vietnam shipped 975,000 tons of coffee, worth US$1.47 billion, up 44 per cent on-year in volume and nearly 86 per cent in value, thanks to high price at global market.

Export price of Vietnamese coffee has reached the record at US$1,800 a ton over the past nine years, up US$80 and US$100 a ton from early September.

Rice export ranked the second with total volume hitting nearly 4.1 million tons valued at US$1.3 billion during the time, down 1.5 per cent in volume but an increase of 15 per cent in value compared with the same period of last year.

Vietnamese rice was traded at US$293 a ton on average, US$42 a tons higher than last year.

Meanwhile, export of rubber was down in terms of volume and price, due to the decrease to China, the largest consumer of Vietnamese rubber.

Since early 2007, Vietnam exported around 502,000t tons of rubber, raking in US$942 million, down 1.6 per cent on-year. Export rubber price to China stood at US$2,122 a ton in mid-September, which was forecast not to surpass US$2,129 a ton in the remaining months despite growing demand.

Cashew nut export that sharply shrank last year rebounded since early of this year to gain fair rises of 22 per cent in terms of volume and 27 per cent in terms of value. Vietnam shipped abroad a total 111,000 tons of cashew nut worth US$466million.

For pepper, Vietnam exported only 68,000 tons and notched up US$218 million, down 35 per cent in volume but an increase of 34 per cent in value.

Export of tea showed moderate rises of both value and volume in nine months, the ministry said. The country earned US$87 million from exporting 82,000 tons, up 9.9 per cent and 7.9 per cent on-year, respectively.

Vegetable and fruit export brought in US$229 million to the country in nine months, up 17.3 per cent.

The ministry said Vietnam’s earnings from woodwork exports and non-timber forestry product exports were US$1.71 billion and US$167 million, up 24.9 per cent and 17.8 per cent, respectively, compared to the January-September period of 2006.

Notably, seafood export contributed up to US$2.731 billion to the country’s export revenue in nine months, a rise of 13.4 per cent against that of last year.

The MARD said it will launch action months for inspecting agricultural input quality and farm produce safety and hygiene from October 10 to December 12.

It is urging localities and enterprises to continue tightening control over quality of farm produce export and seafood export in order to fulfill this year’s export revenue target. (Vietnam Economic Times, GSO Sept Edition)
