Vietnam, the world’s biggest cashew nut exporter, is estimated to have fetched up US$467 million from shipping abroad 112,000 tons of cashew nuts in the past nine months, the General Statistics Office (GSO) said.

The figures marked on year rises of 26.8 per cent in terms of value and 21.7 per cent in terms of volume.

The figure represents 83.4 per cent of its full-year revenue target and 80 per cent of its shipment volume.

The price of cashew nut is expected to stand at US$4,100 per ton by the end of the year, up from US$3,950 last year.

Last year, Vietnam exported 127,000 tons of cashew nuts valued at US$506 million to more than 100 countries and territories.

To increase the quality of cashew nuts, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) issued a new decision to ask 70 per cent of local cashew processing plants to meet the standards of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) by 2010.

The country is now home to around 164 cashew nut exporters, including 26 with annual export revenue of over US$5 million each. (GSO Sept Edition)
