Vietnam automobile traders were estimated to import 14,000 cars in the first eight months, up 62.2 per cent on year, Labor newspaper reported Monday, saying that the country has witnessed a car fever since early this year.

Members of Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) have lacked around 10,000 units to deliver to their customers, of which Toyota is short of 5,000 units, the newspaper noted.

Between January and September, 17 VAMA members reported to have sold 49,240 units, up 83 per cent over last year. Toyota still took the lead with 1,847 vehicles sold in September and 13,579 units, holding 24 per cent and 27.6 per cent, respectively.

VAMA’s 18 members sold 100,000 units a year in the domestic market, the newspaper noted.

The country’s economy is forecast to grow 8.5 per cent this year and new rich people are emerging, which are seen as driving forces in stimulating car sales. (Labor)
