The Russian Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Services (VPSS) has informed the National Fisheries Quality Assurance and Veterinary Directorate Department of Vietnam (Nafiquaved) that it allows ten more Vietnamese companies to export seafood to Russia from October 4 of 2007.

The move brings the total number of Vietnamese companies eligible to export seafood to Russia to 24, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (Vasep) said.

It is made after the VPSS conducted three inspection tours to Vietnamese companies since the beginning of 2007. The first inspection took place in March, the second in July and the third in September.

VPSS recognized necessary measures applied by Nafiqaved to assure fisheries veterinary safety and hygiene of fish and fish products export.

However, VPSS repeated their affirmation to keep rights of inspection on Vietnamese fish processors to find out if their operations meet the food hygiene requirements stipulated by Russia.

Vietnamese companies will export seafood to Russia officially via Saint Petersburg and Vladivostok seaports.

Russia has become one of Vietnam’s major markets and in the first half of this year it accounted for 5.2 per cent of Vietnam’s total seafood exports, ranking the fifth seafood importer after the EU, the US, Japan and South Korea.

Vietnam shipped more than 58,700 tons of aquatic products worth USUS$126.3 million to Russia last year. According to Vasep, Russia is a promising seafood market with consistently rising sales. (www.vasep.com.vn))
