The Ministry of Trade and Industry has recently turned the green light to construction of a big coal-fired power center valued at US$6.1 billion in central Binh Thuan province, a source from the ministry said.
To occupy an area of 335 hectares, the 4,400-megawatt Vinh Tan thermo-power center will be built in Vinh Tan commune, Tuy Phong district.
The project will comprise of three coal-fired power plants, which are estimated to need around 8.8 million tons of coals annually and 50,000 tons of fuel oil (FO) a year as feedstock, the ministry noted.
China’s Southern Power Grid will build the 1,200-MW Vinh Tan 1 power plant totaling US$1.9 billion, which is scheduled for operation between 2010 and 2011.
Meanwhile, the US$1.6-billion Vinh Tan 2 power plant and US$2.6-billion Vinh Tan 3 power plant will be built under the BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) form, to be operated in the 2012-2013 and 2014-2015 periods, at capacities of 1,200 MW and 2,400 MW, respectively.
Currently, the Phu My power complex in southern Ba Ria Vung Tau province is the biggest of its kind in Vietnam with a total capacity of 3,990 MW.
The country will focus on developing thermo-power generation projects after 2010.
Under the national power development plant through 2015 and span to 2025, or the plan 6, the total capacity of thermal power plants will reach 15,497 MW by 2011; 27,261-27,811 MW by 2015; 36,721-40,111 MW by 2020; and 52,871-65,111 MW by 2025. (Pioneer)
