The Iraq Grains Board (IGB) said the country wants to import more rice from Vietnam and Thailand due to their prices’ competitiveness, the Vietnam & World Economy reported Friday.

Iraq has bought at least 110,000 tons of rice, including 60,000 tons from Thailand and 50,000 tons from Vietnam at US$405 a ton, FOB, in the first purchase over the past four months.

Reliable sources said that the IGB had negotiated to buy more around 100,000 tons of rice from the Asian countries, but then had to refuse bids due to concerns over rice delivery possibility.

The sources predicted that rice output of both of Thailand and Vietnam will decrease this year. Meanwhile, Iraq needs to import at least 90,000 tons of rice per month.

Vietnam has signed contracts to export 1.2 million tons of rice and shipped 160,000 tons so far this year. (Vietnam & World Economy)
