Dialogue on pangasius initiated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) took place on March 26 in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta province of Can Tho.

Participants include Vietnamese leaders, local tra and basa catfish exporters and producers and representatives from the WWF and other non-government organizations who will discuss breeding tra and basa catfish and setting up new standards.

The standards will be aimed at reducing or removing eight issues relating to tra and basa breeding, including water pollution that was discussed in the first catfish seminar in Ho Chi Minh city last year.

They will facilitate local exporters and producers to meet requirements of such choosy markets as the U.S. and EU.

Tra and basa catfish dialogue is one of five WWF’s initiatives yearly carried out worldwide.

Vietnam early this year set target to export US$1.2 billion worth of catfish, up from nearly US$1 billion in 2007. (Vietnam Economic Times)
