Vietnam was estimated to have raked in US$55million from exporting 16,000 tons of pepper in the first quarter of 2008, posting an on year rise of 27.8 per cent in value despite a fall of 6 per cent in volume, the General Statistics Office (GSO) said.

High pepper export prices resulting from high demand but low supply on the world market is the major reason for the sharp increase in Vietnam’s export revenues.

Since the beginning of this year, export prices of Vietnamese pepper were averaging at US$4,000 per ton, up US$400 a ton on year. At local market, pepper prices have stood high at VND59,000 a kilo.

A prices rise, Vietnamese pepper growers earn around VND120 million or VND150 million per hectares. (GSO March Edition, VNS)
