The Vietnam Nuclear Energy Institute (VAEC) will submit a project to build two nuclear power plants instead of one as planned earlier to the National Assembly for approval in May of 2009, an official familiar with this matter said.

The Vietnamese government has approved a plan to double the capacity of the country’s first nuclear power plant to 4,000 megawatts with a total investment of nearly US$6 billion, he attributed.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Huu Hao said that the country’s first nuclear power plant will have four turbines and will be located in two separated locations.

The construction on the plant is slated for start in 2015 and completion in 2020 to supply 20 per cent of the national power output, he said.

VAEC Director Vuong Huu Tan said that locations selected to build the two planned nuclear power plants are Phuoc Vinh commune of Ninh Phuoc district and Vinh Hai commune of Ninh Hai district, all belonging to central Ninh Thuan province.

The two locations are 40 kilometers far from each other, causing no effects, Tan said.

The nuclear power plants are expected to generate electricity to provide electricity to southern Vietnam is housing few power plants.

Vietnam plans to build more nuclear power plants, the director added.

Previously, Vietnam intended to build its first nuclear power plant with a capacity of 2,000 MW at a cost of US$4 billion to generate between 14 billion and 15 billion kWh of power annually when fully operational by 2020. (New Hanoi, VietNamNet)
