Vietnam Exports 1 Mln Tons of Rice So Far this Year
Vietnamese companies have shipped more than one million tons of rice worth nearly US$403 million abroad as of April 14, and are striving to fulfill already-signed contracts, the Vietnam Food Association (VFA) said.
Vietnamese rice was offered at US$700 a ton of 5 per cent broken rice, FOB, at Saigon port last week, while prices of 25 per cent broken rice were around US$670 a ton.
The VFA said local exporters will ship an additional 1.1 million tons of rice from now to June under already signed contracts.
Thin supplies in almost all of rice exporters kept prices at high level in the Asian market and local exporters are finding hard in collecting rice from farmers, the VFA said.
According to the Plantation Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mekong Delta and Southeastern regions have completed harvesting 2007-2008 winter-spring paddy with a total output of 9.9 million tons, up 373,000 tons on year.
Local farmers are now rushing to cultivate paddy for summer-autumn crop, with an estimated area of 1.7 million hectares, and output of 7.8 million tons.
Currently, rice are selling for high prices in Mekong Delta region, averaging at VND7,500 a kilo of 5 per cent broken rice; VND7,400 a kilo of 10 per cent broken rice; VND7,300 a kilo of 15 per cent broken rice and VND7,200 a kilo of 25 per cent broken rice. (Vietnam Economic Times)
