Vietnam's CPI Rises Slower in June

Vietnam&rsquos consumer price index (CPI) is estimated to increase 2.14 per cent in June from May, the lowest rise in a single month since the beginning of this year, the government&rsquos General Statistics Office reported.
 
The CPI soared 18.44 per cent from the end of 2007 and 26.8 per cent from one year ago, the GSO said.
 
In June, prices of food and foodstuff remain the key factor for the CPI hike. These items, which account for 42.8 per cent of the commodities basket to calculate CPI, surged 3.29 per cent on month. It rocketed 45.55 per cent on year.
 
The CPI is also driven by prices of beverage and cigarette, which climbed up 1.07 per cent on month, prices of housing and construction materials up 1.93 per cent and prices of housing and construction materials up 1.28 per cent.
 
Prices of foods surged 6.11 per cent and foodstuffs 2.22 per cent against March. These items, which hold 42.8 per cent of the commodities basket to calculate CPI, soared 18.01 per cent from the beginning of this year and 34.11 per cent from one year ago.
 
Postal and telecom charge sees a CPI fall of 0.1 per cent, while other items have the CPI rise of less than 1 per cent in the month.

Prices of gold rose 4.36 per cent on month, while the prices of U.S dollar gained 4.69 per cent against Vietnam dong.
 
The CPI increased 2.2 per cent in urban areas and 2.1 per cent in rural areas. It registered the highest rise of 2.4 per cent in southeastern region and the slowest rise of 1.22 per cent in the northwest region.
 
Among localities involving in CPI calculation, the southern Vinh Long province has highest CPI rise of 2.96 per cent.
 
The 2.14 per cent CPI rise in June is lower than the expansion of 2.38 per cent in January, 3.56 per cent in February, 2.99 per cent in March, 2.2 per cent in April and 3.91 per cent in May.
 
A state media said the eased CPI is attributed to the government&rsquos anti-inflation measures, tight monetary policy, improved supply of food and foods thank to plumpest harvests, surplus of state budget and tight public investment. (GSO, Vietnam Economic Times)
