Agro, Forestry, Seafood Production Values Hit VND93.1 Tln in First Half of 2008

Vietnam&rsquos agricultural, forestry and seafood industries&rsquo production value reached VND93.1 trillion ($5.8 billion) in the first half of 2008, up 4.5% on year and accounting for 21.76% of the country&rsquos GDP value, the General Statistics Office (GSO) reported.
 
The agricultural production value was VND68.7 trillion, up 3.4% forestry value, VND3.2 trillion, up 0.9% and seafood value, VND21.2 trillion, up 8.7%.
 
The GSO showed that Vietnam produced 18 million tons of paddy in winter-spring crop, up by one million tons from the same crop in 2007, including 6.5 million tons in the north and 11.5 million tons in the south.
 
During the first six months this year, Vietnam produced 2.3 million tons of corn, up 4.4% 855,000 tons of batata, down 14% 123,300 tons of soybeans, down 8.1% 399,800 tons of peanuts, up 8.5% and more than 6.4 million tons of veges, up 2.8% on year.
 
Cold snap in early 2008, and foot and mouth and blue-ear diseases reduced the country&rsquos total pig flock to only 25.6 million, down by 3.1% on year. But cow and poultry flocks increased by 3% and 6% in the first half, to 6.5 million and 228 million, respectively.
 
The GSO also said cities and provinces in Vietnam have grown 98,400 hectares of forest during the January-June period of this year, up 0.6% on year.
 
But some 3,614 deforestation cases taking place nationwide damaged 1,245 hectares of forest, up 105.7% on year.
 
In terms of seafood, the country produced 2.124 million tons of aquatic products in the first half, up 11.1%, including 1.04 million tons from aquaculture farms, and 1.07 million tons from fishing vessels. (GSO June Edition)
