Malaysias Berjaya Land Berhad Group July 1 got an investment license to build $3.5 billion international university urban area in Ho Chi Minh City, the first of this kind in Vietnam, the Saigon Giai Phong newspaper reported.
 
To cover a total area of 925 hectares, the project will be divided into five precincts, including international universities, colleges, international and local schools, commercial (offices, retail, shop houses, serviced apartments and others), civic and cultural centers, residential developments, medical centers, sports and recreation, and gardens and parks.
 
The project is expected to be kicked off next year and will be completed in stages from 2011 to 2021, the investor said.
 
It is projected that will accommodate around 76,000 residents, including 20,000 students, the investor added.
 
The project would train high-quality human resources for Ho Chi Minh City and the country as a whole, Nguyen Huu Tin, vice chairman of HCM City People&rsquos Committee said at the granting ceremony.
 
Currently, Vietnam has 357 universities, institutions and colleges. The country aims to inaugurate two international-standard universities next year and build a Vietnamese university listed on the world&rsquos top 200 universities and several others among the worlds top 500 by 2020.
