Vietnam’s plastics sector is estimated to make export revenues of US$950 million while spending more than US$3.1 billion on imports in 2008, according to the Vietnam Plastics Association.

The industry expects to obtain total revenues of US$5 billion in 2008, up 26 per cent on-year, the association said.

Annually, enterprises supply merely 300,000 tons of plastic materials like PET and PVC to the domestic market while having to import up to 1.6 million-1.7 million tons of PE, PP, PS and others, let alone hundreds of other auxiliary chemicals.

Vietnam is now home to around 2,000 plastics enterprises, most of them are medium and small ones, and 80 per cent of which are based in Ho Chi Minh City. (Pioneer, News)
