Power-thirsting Vietnam is seeking partners to start construction of its first nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 4,000 MW in 2013 in central Ninh Thuan province, said Vuong Huu Tan, associate professor and doctor from the Vietnam Atomic Energy Commission.

The US$9 billion plants will be located in Phuoc Dinh commune of Ninh Phuoc district and Vinh Hai commune of Ninh Hai district with an expected for operation in 2020.

Nuclear power development is an optimal solution to Vietnam to deal with its current severe power lack estimated to hit around 64 billion kWh of electricity in 2020 and climb to 120 billion kWh in 2030.

The Southeast Asian country intends to construct two or three nuclear power plants with combined capacity of 8,000 MW costing US$16 billion through 2025.

The country is predicted to face a severe power shortage of 10.3 billion kWh this year while the northern region will lack 200 million kWh of electricity during the dry season. (Labor, Vietnam Post)
