Vietnam Currently Has 754 Towns, Cities
Vietnam has 754 towns and cities at present, up 125 compared with 10 years ago, Minister of Construction Nguyen Hong Quan said at a national conference on urban development held in Hanoi on November 6.
The conference aims to work out measures for sustainable urban development in close connection with rural development.
Quan also added that urban population has increased by 3.4% per annum to 26 million over the period.
Addressing the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung said urban development plays an important role in the process of national construction and helps Vietnam achieve its target of becoming a developed industrial country.
He urged experts and urban managers to seek more scientific ways of developing urban areas and enlisting the participation of the whole society.
Hung highlighted the importance of matching population scale to make the population size to infrastructure, calling for efforts to avoid excessive concentrations of population in major cities.
The Deputy Prime Minister asked the Ministry of Construction and government agencies to pay greater attention to strategic planning and human resources training to bring Vietnamese cities and towns meet international standards. (Vietnam Economic Times, VNA)
