The State Bank of Vietnam, the country’s central bank, has granted quotas for the import of 10 tons of gold after removing a ban on gold imports from Nov 12.

Of the volume, 6.8 tons had already arrived in Vietnam, the VTV1 channel reported, citing Governor Nguyen Van Giau of the SBV at noon on November 25.

He added that eight banks and three gold trading companies were licensed for the imports. Their names, however, have not yet been specified.

Vietnam imported about 800 tons of gold over the past 15 years, including 90.5 tons in 2008, 51 tons in 2007, 91 tons in 2006 and 48 tons in 2005. The country, meanwhile, exported only 11 tons in 2008 and 26.7 tons in 2009.

Gold has climbed to VND28.9 million per tael in Vietnam on this morning [Nov 25], nearing the record high of VND29.3 million on Nov 11, up 9.34% from October.

Analysts predicted that gold prices will continue to go up in Vietnam thanks to possible rises on the global market. (VTV)
