Vietnam’s footwear industry exported US$1.56 billion worth of products to the EU market between January and October. Of the total, the export turnover of leather cap shoes reached US$800 million.

The country’s leather cap shoes exports to the EU market will likely escape from anti-dumping duties as soon, the paper cited Diep Thanh Kiet, vice chairman of the Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso).

The European Union's anti-dumping committee has recently rejected a proposal to extend the penalty duties on shoes originated from Vietnam and China, Kiet explained.

He also forecast that Vietnam’s leather shoes exports may grow 15%-20% in 2010 from 2009 if the export market recovers and the EC removes the duty because the EU market is among Vietnam’s biggest footwear importers.

Kiet, however, noted Vietnamese leather cap shoes are being sold at 10% higher than the price of Chinese products in the EU market.

Vietnam-imported shoes are less competitive than Chinese shoes because Vietnamese makers find difficult to seek sources of materials, the Lefaso vice chairman added. (Youth)
