WB Official: Vietnam Economy May Face Challenges in 2011-2015
The World Bank Country Director in Vietnam, Victoria Kwakwa told a seminar on socioeconomic plans of Vietnam for 2011-2015 that the Southeast Asian country’s economy will be exposed to challenges.
The challenges will be difficulties in narrowing the rich-poor gap, improving education and training and avoiding the trap of a medium income country it may face in the next five years, Victoria Kwakwa noted.
We would like to see specific measures from the government of Vietnam to ensure sustainable growth, said the World Bank official said, urging it should focus on helping poor people to escape from the poverty trap.
Ms Fiona Lappin, an official from U.K. DFID proposed the government should focus on solving shortcoming of the period of 2006-2010, which are low effectiveness of investments.
I pay special attention to a mechanism to assess the implementation of the socioeconomic plans and if the mechanism does not work properly, the plans will unlikely be implemented effectively, Fion Lappin noted.
Meanwhile, Le Xuan Ba, dean of the Central Institute of Economic Management (CIEM) saw a contradiction between high growth and sustainable development. Ba suggested that Vietnam should focus on the growth quality.
Vietnam’s socioeconomic development plans for 2011-2015 prioritize high competitiveness of industrial and service products combined with efficient agricultural production bound to exports. (Investment)
