Trade between Vietnam and Russia is forecast to reach US$2 billion in 2009, soaring 21.88% from a year earlier.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade made the estimate at a meeting on boosting Vietnamese exports to Russia held by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in Hanoi on Dec. 14.

Vietnamese businesses should further boost trade promotion in Russia, Andrei Maximov, a representative from Russia’s Business Systems Development (RBS) Audit-Consulting Group.

Russia is an important gateway to the East European market and one of the biggest import market of Vietnamese seafood, he noted, adding that seafood contributes nearly 70% of Vietnam’s total export value to Russia.

Last year, trade between Vietnam and Russia stood at US$1.64 billion, including Vietnam’s trade deficit of US$298 million.
