Long Xuyen City: Big Leap forward for New Height
Long Xuyen City in the southern province of An Giang was recently recognised as a province-level second-graded urban area under Prime Minister’s Decision 474/QD-TTg. This is a gift for tireless effort of the local party and people to speed up the socio-economic development.
With a special position and dynamic economic development, Long Xuyen is considered as an economic, political, social and sci-tech of An Giang province and also a traffic centre in the Mekong Delta region and the whole country. Over the past ten years since its founding day, the local party and people have made great effort to overcome difficulties and challenges to boost its integration. For a ten-year process of attempts, Long Xuyen town has featured a modern urban area.
Taking advantages of a favourable geographical position and available potentials, Long Xuyen has made breakthroughs with an average economic growth rate of 13.5 percent per year. The economic structure has moved to the industrial production, trade and services sectors. By the end of last year, its per capital income was estimated at VND29 million and annual budget collection surpassed the year target. Services sector accounts for up to 70.74 percent of the town’s economic structure, industrial sector with 25.03 percent and agriculture with 4.23 percent. In the first nine months of this year, the town gained an impressive economic growth rate of 8.5 percent. The industrial and construction sector achieved the growth of 1.14 percent and trade and services with 14.25 percent. The culture and social areas have also gained positive results. Local people’s living condition is improved. Particularly, the town has paid attention to urban construction. Long Xuyen town has also seen a high urbanisation rate and infrastructure improvement.
Long Xuyen is aimed to become a “A modern city; a political, cultural and a sci-tech centre of An Giang province with stable security and social order situation; improvement in people’s living condition and a key position in the Mekong Delta region’s urban area system” by 2010. The local authority will try more to deal with the current difficulties to reach a comprehensive development. The town will focus on implementing the government’s stimulus packages, help enterprises recover their business and production activities, aiming an annual economic growth rate of 10 percent this year, 14.5 percent next year. The trade and services sector are expected to make up 71 percent of its economic structure, industry with 26 percent and agriculture with 3 percent. The key solutions are boosting the infrastructure development, calling on investment for important projects besides environment protection. The town will accelerate the urban planning by 2010 and a vision for further development until 2020 in order to turn the town into a first-class urban area in the next 10 and 15 years.
