The European Union (EU)’s plan to impose anti-dumping duties on Vietnam’s leather-capped shoes is a wrong step, causing negative effects on the Vietnam’s economy, the Lao Dong newspaper cited Chairman of the European Chamber of Commerce (EuroCham) Alain Cany on December 17.

Addressing the press conference Dec 16, Alain Cany affirmed the community of European enterprises in Vietnam opposes the EU’s move.

In late Oct, the European Commission (EC) made public an end-term review which said Vietnam’s leather-capped shoes have continued dumping and proposed an extension of the penalty taxes of 10% for another 15 months (from January 2010 to March 2011).

Ambassadors and ministers of 27 EU countries will meet on December 17-22 to make a final decision on this issue.

Alain Cany said he will try his utmost to persuade European politicians to back Vietnamese shoes makers. (Labor)
