Vietnam is estimated to have earned US$9.004 billion from exporting apparels in 2009, down 1.3% against last year, the government’s General Statistic Office said Thursday, Dec 31.

In Dec, the country’s apparel export turnover is estimated to have reached US$820 million, up 12.33% against Nov.

Vietnamese apparel exporters failed to reach the full-year target of US$9.1 billion-US$9.2 billion despite the increase of orders during this year’s remaining months.

The U.S. is still the biggest importer of Vietnamese apparels this year, accounting for 50% of the sector’s total export turnover, followed by the EU with 20%, said the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas).

This year, Vietnam is forecast to have spent US$7.33 billion on importing cottons, textile fibers, cloth and accessories for the industries of apparel and footwear.

Of the total, the country spent US$383 million on importing cottons, down 18% on-year, US$792 million on textile fibers, up 2.1%, US$4.2 billion on cloth, down 5.2%, and US$1.9 billion on apparel and footwear accessories, down 17.8%. (GSO)
