Laos Remains Most Attractive Destination for Vietnamese Firms
Vietnamese companies have to date invested $3.16 billion in 169 projects in Laos, making it their most favored destination.
It is followed by Russia and Malaysia with $1.71 billion and $811 million respectively. The runners up are Cambodia, Algeria, the U.S. and Cuba, the newspaper citied the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI).
Most of Vietnamese projects abroad focus on mining sector with 75 projects worth $3.58 billion and entertainment services and agro-forestry-fishery projects with $1.12 billion and $984.4 million respectively.
Last year, Vietnamese firms poured $2.458 billion abroad, raising its total overseas investment by end-December to $7.73 billion in 465 projects.
This year, Vietnam’s overseas investment is forecast to be higher than the figure of 2009 as the local government has issued many policies to encourage projects abroad, said Bui Quoc Trung, deputy head of the MPI’s Foreign Investment Agency.
Vietnamese companies have registered to invest in a large number of projects abroad this year, Trung said without elaboration.
He added that local businesses are interested in the areas of mining, agriculture and processing in foreign countries and territories this year. (vneconomy.vn)
