Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan urged Japanese companies to invest more in the city, particularly in the areas of human resource training and infrastructure development.

Quan made the appeal at a meeting on June 1 with Toshio Kashiwagi, newly-appointed President of the Japan Business Association in Ho Chi Minh City (JBAH) and Chief Representative of the Mitsubishi Co., Ltd in Vietnam.

The municipal government will create the most favorable conditions for Japanese projects, including ones to build bridges, tunnels, roads and metro, according to the chairman.

Speaking at the meeting, Toshio Kashiwagi said Vietnam is among the safe destinations for Japanese firms thanks to its stable business environment and attractive incentives.

The Japanese official, however, added that Japanese businesses complain about several difficulties in the city, including the shortage of electricity, water and skilled workers as well as poor infrastructure.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will fund JPY18.3 billion (US$203.6 million) to the East-West Corridor and Water Environment Improvement projects in the southern metropolis.

Japanese firms have to date poured US$19.3 billion into 1,211 projects in Vietnam, ranking the 3rd among the countries and territories making investment in the country.
