Sluggish Site Clearance May Slow Down Japan-funded Bridge Project
Construction of the Nhat Tan bridge with a total cost of VND13.6 trillion, funded by Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC), is likely to lag behind schedule to due sluggish site clearance in two outlying communes of Hanoi.
Hoang Trung Kinh from the Ta Ngan Project Management Unit under the municipal People’s Committee said the stagnancy has driven up total site clearance expense to VND1.5 trillion from initial estimate of VND969 billion.
Residents in Vinh Ngoc commune of Dong Anh district and Phu Thuong commune of Tay Ho district disagreed with compensations, saying that it is not enough.
Kinh said construction of the bridge started in March 2009 and was scheduled for completion in 2012, however, only half of the workload has been finished to date.
Once operational, Nhat Tan bridge will be Vietnam’s longest and the most modern suspension bridge and be the sixth spanning over the Red River behind Long Bien, Thang Long, Chuong Duong, Vinh Tuy and Thanh Tri bridges.
The nine-km and four-lane bridge is expected to help shorten travel distance from the heart of Hanoi to the Noi Bai International Airport. (Construction)
