Ho Chi Minh City’s consumer price index (CPI) in July is estimated to have dropped 0.09% from June, marking it as the first monthly fall since Nov 2009.

The slight decrease was driven by lower costs of foods and foodstuffs, construction materials and fuel, Du Quang Nam, head of the municipal Statistics Office, said.

The index was up 8.71% from a year earlier and 4.78% from the beginning of 2010, he said, adding that prices of foods and foodstuffs rose 0.8% and 1.02% a month, respectively, in the first seven months of this year.

Nam cited unfavorable weather condition, animal and crop disease spread, and higher input materials costs as major reasons to cause the index up sharply in the period.

Gold surged 1.83% on-month in July, backed by escalating prices on the global market, while the U.S. dollar edged up 0.43% due to a rumor on weak supply. (VNA)
