Vietnam Bay Named among World’s Most Surreal Landscapes
The U.S.-based Daily Telegraph has announced the list of world’s top-ten surreal landscapes, including Vietnam's Ha Long Bay, a world natural heritage recognized by the UNESCO, the National Administration of Tourism said on its website July 28.
Halong Bay features 3,000 limestone pillars rising out of the emerald waters on the northwest coast of the Gulf of Tonkin. Local legend has it that the islands were created by giant dragons, summoned by the gods to fight foreign invaders.
The bay, located in the East Sea about 160 kilometers (100 miles) east of Hanoi, was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1994.
Other sites in the list are Valley of Desolation, Dominica; Painted Desert, Arizona;
Purnululu National Park, Australia; Petrified Forest, Argentina; Wadi Rum, Jordan; Lake Myvatn, Iceland; Cappadocia, Turkey; Lake Bogoria, Kenya and Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia. (www.vietnamtourism.gov.vn)
