The Vietnam Food Hygiene and Safety Department has recently coordinated with the Ho Chi Minh City Branch of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI-HCM) to organise a seminar titled “Collecting opinions for the Decree on Food Safety.” The purpose of the workshop is to gather comments from companies, business associations and experts on consistency, rationality and feasibility of the draft decree for policymakers to have more opinions for the perfection of the new ruling.
Participants discussed and contributed opinions about regulations on compliance certificates and certification validity for packaged processed foods, food additives, packaging materials, and containers in direct contact with foods. They also debated the decentralisation of State management responsibilities for food safety or regulations in fields without food safety certificates.

Nguyen Cong Khan, Director of the Vietnam Food Hygiene and Safety Department, said that the draft decree provides detailed instructions for implementation of some articles of the Law on Food Safety, which clearly define responsibilities of ministries and agencies in State management over food safety. Accordingly, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade share responsibility for food safety issues. People’s Committees of all tiers and other authorities will coordinate with the Ministry of Health to ensure uniformity of State management on food safety.
