One of important upcoming objectives of the trade and industry sector of Hau Giang province is to create favourable conditions for Vietnamese brands to secure a solid foothold, thereby helping Vietnamese businesses to gradually build up consumer confidence in local products, boost production and development, and develop the retail market. This will also encourage Vietnamese consumers to use more locally made products, stabilise market prices and curb inflation.
In 2011, the Hau Giang industry and trade sector achieved significant results in all aspects to lay a stronger groundwork for its development strategy in the 2011 - 2015 period.

In 2011, the economic growth in Region 2 was 17.1 percent and the rate in Region 3 was 19 percent. The value of industrial production and construction climbed 22.1 percent and the value of trade and service expanded 21.5 percent. Industrial output value was VND4,212 billion in 2011, up 28.28 percent over 2010 and equal to 117.01 percent of the full-year plan. Export and import turnover was US$219 million, up 5.19 percent and equal to 104.65 percent of the yearly plan. Total retail and service revenues were VND16,712 billion, up 44.57 percent year on year and equal to 117.69 percent of the plan.

The province earned US$220 million from exports and imports in 2011, of which export turnover and overseas remittances accounted for US$194 million and imports were US$26 million. The province’s key exports included processed seafood like frozen, breaded and fried fish and shrimp (about 28,000 tonnes), rice (about 90,000 tonnes), mushrooms and canned pineapple. Mr Nguyen Thanh Hung, Director of Hau Giang Department of Industry and Trade, said: Hau Giang province will continue supporting the production and exportation of the above products while seeking new potential exports like handicraft and fruits.

Mr Hung said local exports have secured a solid foothold in many markets in the world, with growing revenues. In addition to increase shipments to traditional markets like Russia, Japan, the US, Canada and China, the department will advise the Provincial People’s Committee and the Ministry of Industry and Trade to support local companies to introduce, advertise and penetrate new markets like Europe and South Africa. Besides, the province will enhance market price information, supply and demand forecast and disseminate international trade regulations and policies in importing nations to enterprises.

One of resounding successes of the Hau Giang industry and trade sector in 2011 was the response to the “Buy Vietnamese” campaign which encouraged Vietnamese people to give priority to made-in-Vietnam products. It collaborated with other relevant agencies to organise domestic trade fair attendance for 295 companies, took part in five trade fairs, organised 14 countryside selling trips which attracted over 200,000 people and generated revenues of VND20 billion.

Mr Hung added that in 2012 the department will advise the Provincial People’s Committee to organise 40 countryside journeys to sell Vietnamese goods, and 12 trade fairs, including two at the provincial level.
With its efforts and achievements in 2011, the Hau Giang industry and trade sector was awarded the flag for outstanding performance by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam.
