Sustainable Industrial Development

Industrial development is an important task in the cause of Danang city's socio-economic growth, contributing to turning Danang into one of the country's major urban economic, cultural, scientific and technology centres in the central region. Danang also has an important strategic position in terms of national defence and security of the Central region and the country.
 
According to Danang Department of Trade and Industry, Danang has about 4,800 industrial production establishments including 850 enterprises of all economic sectors, 48 of which are FDI-invested, the others being individual production establishments. The total number of employees in industry is about 91,000, accounting for 20 percent of the total work force.
 
The industrial development of Danang emphasizes effective and sustainable development, promotion of the advantages of Danang in the central economic zone and the linkage among localities on the basis of a reasonable distribution of industry structure. Focus is laid on selective industrial development with priority given to development of sectors and products using modern technology and advanced techniques, and with high added value. Importance is also attached to the development of supporting and export production industries. It is essential to create a fundamental change in the internal industry structure in the direction of clean and high added value industry. It is also imperative to change the internal industry quality to support the socio-economic development of the city.
 
Sharing the development objectives for industry in the coming time, Mr Phan Van Kha, Director of Danang City Industry and Trade Department, revealed that GDP growth of construction industry in the period of 2006-2010, 2011-2015 and 2016-2020 is 11, 12.3 and 12.2 percent per year, respectively. For industry as a whole, the growth rate is expected to achieve 12.5 percent per year for the period of 2011-2020. The proportion of construction industry in the economic structure of the city in 2010, 2015 and 2020 is 47.5, 45.4 and 42.8 percent, respectively. Industrial production value for the period of 2006-2010, 2011-2015 and 2016-2020 is targeted at 12.49, 13.24 and 12.2 percent per year, respectively.
 
According to Mr Kha, Danang is paying attention to developing export goods to replace imports, and industries capable of meeting economic development needs of neighbouring provinces and the whole country. Simultaneously, priority is given to human resource development and preferential policies for some major industrial products which represent the city’s future industry. It is necessary to underpin the development of fishery and seafood processing for service export, port service industry and maritime transport and different types of industry associated with port systems. Focus is also laid on product diversification, development and distribution of industrial production facilities, open and multi-sector development. For businesses, it is important to make intensive investment, develop integrated industrial zones and apply information technology in all areas of business management and administration to enhance competitiveness and contribute to integration.
 
Mr Kha believes that, for a well-developed industry, it is essential to mobilize and use financial resources effectively, promoting internal resources and create favourable conditions to effectively exploit every external funding resource. It is crucial to organize the effective operation of the City Development Fund. It is essential to maintain and continue to improve the investment environment to increase participation in all economic sectors, especially by foreign investors. At the same time, attention should be paid to developing human resources and applying information technology, policies and solutions on land to exploit all the strengths for the most effective development of the industry of a leading city in Vietnam.
