Lawaco: "Sustainable Development – Safe Water Supply"

As the quality of life is getting higher, the demand for clean water in everyday life of the people is growing. To meet this demand effectively, Single-Member Long An Water Company Limited (Lawaco) has enlisted the budget and ODA loans to construct Tan An water supply plant with the capacity of 15,000 cubic meters per day, Go Den Water Supply Plant with the capacity of 7,200 cubic meters per day, Binh Anh water supply plant with the capacity of 15,000 cubic meters per day, meeting the needs of industrial development in the service area as well as ensuring the provision of clean water for people and contributing to improving the quality of life of urban residents.
Along with investing in water projects to timely meet the economic development needs of the province, Lawaco pays special attention to the protection of water resources. With the aim of minimizing the exploitation of groundwater, replacing groundwater with surface water and preventing degradation and water pollution, Lawaco is planning to invest in a surface water plant with the expected capacity of 60,000 cubic meters per day (30,000 cubic meters per day in phase one) and a joint venture project with foreign and domestic partners using surface water of Vam Co Dong River with the capacity of 50,000 cubic meters per day (20,000 cubic meters per day in phase one). In addition, the company, in co-ordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, is constructing the coordination regulations on protecting surface water resources with neighbouring provinces like Tien Giang for provincial People's Committees to sign, promulgate and implement.
 
Following the development trend of the country, Long An Province is striving to become an industrial province by 2020. To meet the requirements of economic development of the province, in recent years, Lawaco has also carried out investigation and assessment of the growing water demand through the years as well as the actual demand for water in the region and future needs to have orientation for investment of water supply projects suiting economic growth of the province. For a more specific vision, Lawaco undertook the planning of a water supply system to 2020 with orientation towards 2030 approved by the provincial People's Committee. Accordingly, the Company has the basis for water supply projects which will be formed in the near future including Bao Dinh Water Plant with the capacity of 60,000 cubic meters per day (30,000 cubic meters per day in phase one) which will be completed in 2016; Binh Anh Water Supply Plant with increased capacity of 30,000 cubic meters day, which will be completed in 2015; Duc Hoa Water Supply Project Phase 1 with the capacity of 20,000 cubic meters per day from the water source of Sawaco, which will be completed in 2014; Ben Luc water supply projects, a joint venture with local and foreign investors, with the capacity of 50,000 meters per day (20,000 cubic meters per day in phase one), which will be completed in 2014. In general, Lawaco is well prepared for the requirements of industrialization and modernization of the province and able to meet the water demand for the local economic development.

With the goal of "Sustainable development - Safe Water Supply", in the coming time, Lawaco will maintain the stable operation of existing water supply plants, control production process of safe water supply, reduce drainage losses under the National Programme against water losses towards 2025. Besides, the company has also built an energy control program in business operation and expanded the service area by investing in projects and water supply network system in accordance with provincial plans approved by the provincial People’s Committee, providing clean water for 100 percent of urban and rural population.
 
Particularly, to make water management synchronous and systematic, Lawaco is planning to submit to the provincial People’s Committee a project on the construction of a sewer system and wastewater treatment for Tan An City. This is also a project that Long An province and its People’s Committee are especially devoted to. It is expected to be completed in the term towards 2015.
