According to Insightec, Vietnam has several treatment methodologies to uterine fibroids using HIFU-MRI method, but the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not recognised because of its limitations to FUS-MRI. Meanwhile, FUS-MRI method was approved by the FDA at in Bao Son Hospital 2. Chairman Nguyen Truong Son of Bao Son Hospital said patients will be treated only once and FUS-MRI will determine the location and size of tumours. Then, machines will automatically programme and emit high-energy ultrasound waves, converged into one point to kill tumours.
According to experts, about 12,000 women have been treated with FUS-MRI method so far. FUS-MRI is widely used in developed countries like the United States Canada, Brazil, Germany, England, France, Spain, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. In particular, this method kills abnormal tissues in human body without surgery; thus, it causes no scar or no damage to surrounding healthy tissues. Patients do not need to be anesthetised or hospitalised for treatment. According to doctors, FUS-MRI is suitable for women at reproductive age. The painless method takes 3-4 hours for treatment. Patients can return to daily normal activity after the treatment.
