As a leading centre for laser health equipment research, application and production in Vietnam, Vietnam Korea Medical Corporation (VIKOMED) is a good example of ongoing efforts for close and tight cooperation between Vietnamese and Korean scientists and businesses.
In 2007, the formation of VIKOMED translated the expectations and trusted cooperation of the Vietnam Laser Technology Centre and GEMSS Medical System Co., Ltd, a leading medical equipment manufacturer in Korea. As the fruits of searching, meeting and connecting processes between Vietnamese and Korean scientists, after eight years of operation, VIKOMED is currently an industry leader in medical equipment research, application and manufacturing in Vietnam. VIKOMED’s products, made by advanced and most effective technologies, are always centred on customers’ demands.
In the domestic market, VIKOMED is the first company to have a modern medical equipment manufacturing and assembling factory, situated on a 10,000 square metre campus in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park. This is the biggest medical equipment production facility in Southeast Asia. In 2016, VIKOMED plans to construct an electronic and high-tech research and development (R&D) centre on an area of 2 ha.
With the technology from GEMSS, VIKOMED has manufactured high-quality medical devices, certified by international certification agencies. The company now has offices in many provinces and cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, Da Nang and Yen Bai. The firm is now a strategic supplier of picture archiving and communication system (PACS) and hospital information system (HIS) solutions for a number of leading hospitals like Bach Mai, Viet Duc, Hanoi Medical University and Hanoi Friendship Hospital. With superior Web-based technology, DICOM HL7 international standards, high security mechanism, easy installation, deployment and maintenance, and diversified supporting tools, the company’s products have received the appreciation and satisfaction of customers.
Cooperation expansion
Sharing experience drawn from working and cooperation with Korean partners, Dr Tran Ngoc Liem, President of VIKOMED, said, for a partner with advanced technologies and abundant resources as GEMSS, VIKOMED always focuses on building a proactive relationship and mutual trust to ensure effective operations of the joint venture. Besides, it is very important to train and develop abundant, qualified personnel imbued with business ethics and readiness to take on new technologies from Korea. So, with specialists from Korea and engineers trained in Korea, VIKOMED will quickly localise all X-ray and digital C-ARM products.
VIKOMED has maintained its position as a leader in medical equipment research, application and manufacturing in Vietnam and endeavoured to reach new markets in the region. Although the company is a major medical device supplier in the country, 80 percent of its products are exported to foreign markets. In 2015, the signing of Vietnam - Korea Free Trade Agreement (VKFTA) marked a milestone in facilitating technology transfer and localising production at VIKOMED. Lowered tariff barriers in South Korea will enable VIKOMED to accelerate localisation, reduce product costs and gradually master technologies.
With the goal of becoming a leading medical equipment company in Southeast Asia and listing its shares on the stock market, VIKOMED has been expanding business operations and trade promotion. Together with medical device production, VIKOMED will conduct R&D in environment-friendly technologies, nanotechnologies for water treatment and other technological devices.
To realise this goal, the company will associate with Korean partners to train its staff through short courses abroad. In addition to expanding production to meet growing requirements in international markets, VIKOMED expects to receive preferential policies from the Government. All these efforts will bring products of products of quality products of international quality at affordable prices, improve health for Vietnamese people, and eventually help VIKOMED realise its goal of becoming a leading medical equipment company in Southeast Asia.
