Netherlands Boost Water Cooperation with Vietnam
Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment Melanie Schultz van Haegen recently paid a working visit to Vietnam to discuss the bilateral water cooperation.
During the visit, she worked with Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Minh Quang, and representatives from various ministries. These high-level talks were seen as crucial to further promote cooperation in water management and adaptation to climate change.
The Netherlands can share its experience in creating islands to prevent sand from sliding off the coast in central Vietnam. Minister Schultz also discussed with Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development on water security in Vietnam.
In addition, she held talks with partner representatives such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank (WB) and Asian Development Bank (ADB). Currently, the WB is developing a US$300 million project based on recommendations of the Mekong Delta Planning.
On March 31, she paid a courtesy visit to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee together with representatives of the Government of Rotterdam City, the Dutch Water Authority and Vitens Evides International Company. These partners are now collaborating with Vietnam and offering sustainable water management solutions. Current extreme drought indicates the urgency for seeking a solution to deal with salt water intrusion and water scarcity. The minister shared the experience of the Netherlands in this field.
