KienGiang Province's Trade Sector: Expanding and Diversifying Market

As the market economy boosts trade, all economic sectors are participating in commercial activities. Kien Giang province has also expanded and diversified its markets keeping pace with economic integration.
 
Expansion of markets
 
Kien Giang has developed its economy in all three regions : urban, rural and island areas with varied products meeting the demand of the consumers. The turnover of trade and service increased from VND5,532 billion in 2001 to VND8,522 billion in 2004 and will be VND10,000 billion in 2005. Distribution channels become more stable connecting the production with the market, wholesale with retail network, including via the Internet. Trade fairs and promotion programmes have been organised even in rural and island areas.
 
The export value increased from US$107.7 million in 2001 to US$164.55 million in 2004 and will be US$197.11 million in 2005. Aquatic products make up 49.57 per cent of the export volume, agricultural produce 48.78 per cent and others 1.65 per cent. Aquatic products of the province are processed with international system of quality management and exported to prestige markets such as the US, Japan, and the EU. The province has increased both the number of exporters and export markets, from 9 exporters and 20 export markets in 2001 to 12 and 38 respectively in 2004.
 
Diversification of markets
 
In the coming years, Kien Giang will develop markets in all three areas : urban, rural and island. The supply will be plentiful and diversified, meeting the demand of the production and consumption. More market places, commercial centres and supermarkets will be developed in line with the urbanisation and socio-economic development. Kien Giang will expand export markets and increase competitiveness of such products as rice, fruit, shrimp and handicraft articles, and at the same time boost the export value of non-State and FDI enterprises in the province.
