Vietnam is estimated to ship abroad 7.64 million tons of coal in the first quarter of this year, up 19.4 per cent on-year, earning US$236 million, rising 14.7 per cent against the same period last year, the General Statistics Office (GSO) reported.

In the three-month span, the coal industry reported total output of 9.85 million tons, an on-year increase of 7.7 per cent, the office said.

Vietnam exports coal to 16 countries and territories worldwide, major export markets are China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

The country plans to export some 20 million tons of coal this year, compared with roughly 29.8 million tons last year.

It plans to reduce export of fossil fuels like crude oil and coal from 2008, to ensure sufficient supplies for oil refineries and energy-dependent industries like electricity and cement. (GSO Mar 2007)
