Ho Chi Minh City has set a goal to build 6,000 luxurious hotel rooms by 2010 to meet the increasing demand of its tourism sector, state media said.

To turn this into reality, the municipal tourism department is presently surveying 23 premises to invest in the building of high-end hotels, Dong Thi Kim Vui, director of the city’s Department of Tourism said, adding that it will continue to study other places for more luxury accommodation centers in the 2011-2012 period.

Vui also noted that the department will further cooperate with tourist agents to increase the number of tourists in accommodation centers to make utmost use of current hotels.

Ho Chi Minh City is now home to 40 three-star and above hotels with 6,624 rooms, mainly located in Districts 1, 3, and 5. Among those, 11 are five-star, making up 60 per cent of the total of rooms, which is quite low compared to 29 in Bangkok and 28 in Kaula Lumpur.

The city expects to welcome 2.65 million international visitors and earn revenue of VND19.5 trillion (US$1.2 billion) from the hospitality in 2007, up 10 per cent and 20 per cent on-year respectively. (Vietnamnet)
