BIM Kien Giang Ltd., started October 1 the work on VND800 billion (US$50 million) tourism complex on Phu Quoc, the biggest island of Vietnam, state media said.

Covering 155 hectares, the project will be home to four-to six-star hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues, seaside square, conference hall, and shopping streets.

The complex is scheduled to be put into operation by the end of 2011.

Phu Quoc’s People’s Committee said it has licensed up to 46 investment projects costing US$1.03 billion.

Lying in the Gulf of Thailand, the 561 square kilometer island often considered the cleanest area in Southeast Asia. It has also been selected as a model for the marketing and advertising of the tourism sector's images to both foreign and local tourists.

Presently, Phu Quoc has 254 hotel rooms and 63 guesthouses with nearly 1,200 rooms. The island aims to raise the room number to 3,500 by 2010 and 18,000 by 2020.

Phu Quoc expects to welcome between 300,000 and 3 million visitors a year in the 2010-2020 span. Among them, the number of international arrivals makes up for up to 40 per cent of the total. Revenue from the hospitality sector during the period will reach US$45 million-US$771 million. (Vietnam Economic Times, Pioneer)
