The Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research this year opened on November 4, 2007 at Thien Quang Lake. This huge charity event is inspired by the sacrifice of Terry Fox, a young Canadian who died trying to run across Canada after he lost a leg to cancer. The event is open to all – runners and walkers, adults and children.

“Last year, the Terry Fox Run in Hanoi had 8,000 people, making it the fourth largest Terry Fox Run in the world outside Canada,” remarked Ambassador Gabriel-M Lessard. “We have raised more than VND3 billion for cancer research in Vietnam since 2000,” he added. “With support from the community and media, this has become one of the biggest outdoor events in Hanoi.”

“Funds raised from previous Terry Fox Runs have enabled us to detect and screen breast and cervical cancer among women in Hanoi and to investigate the use of a tumour marker in cancer treatment,” said Dr Tran Dang Khoa, Director of Hanoi Cancer Hospital. “We hope that more funds are raised this year so that we can pursue new research on the use of chemicals with radio therapy in the treatment of cancers.”
