Vietnam is estimated to need more than US$2.8 billion to develop its airport infrastructure from now to 2015, the Vietnam Investment Review reported November 26.

The investment is expected to be sourced from the State budget and foreign investments, according to an official from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam.

Vietnam has planned to enhance its airport capacity by 2.5 times by 2015 and four times by 2020 when the country put as many as 24 airports, including 10 international ones, into use.

International airports including Hanoi's Noi Bai, Quang Nam province's Chu Lai, Khanh Hoa province's Cam Ranh, Phu Quoc Island's Duong To and Thua Thien-Hue's Phu Bai will be upgraded by then.

Vietnam's air transport industry served nearly 7.2 million domestic and foreign passengers in the first 10 months of this year, up 16.5 per cent on year.

The industry also transported 108,100 tons of cargoes during the time, up 4 per cent on year, according to the country's General Statistics Office.

Vietnam's aviation market is expected to grow 12 per cent-14 per cent annually from now to 2010, 9 per cent-11 per cent in the 2010-2015 period, and 10 per cent-12 per cent in the 2015-2020 period, according to the administration. (VIR)
