More than 100 Vietnamese and Uruguayan businesses attended the Vietnam-Uruguay business forum held by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in collaboration with the Uruguayan Embassy in Vietnam on November 20, 2007. At this forum, the President of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, Tabare Ramon Vazquez Rosas, affirmed that Uruguay wanted to boost bilateral cooperation with Vietnam in politics, economy, commerce, science, technology and culture.
More than 20 enterprises are accompanying the President, leading firms operating in farming, foodstuff, butter, dairy, bio-genetic technology, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, timber, chemicals, fishery, software and seaports.
Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez said Uruguay has a balanced and sustainable macro economy. In the coming time, the two countries can cooperate in many sectors such as industry, farm products and food processing, biotech, infrastructure, post and telecom. “Vietnamese businesses doing business in Uruguay will not be discriminated against, will be given encouraging production incentives and will enjoy a transparent and effective management mechanism,” he affirmed.
VCCI President Vu Tien Loc said commercial ties between Vietnam and Uruguay have consistently increased, jumping from a mere US$4.85 million in 2003 to US$19.3 million in 2006. In the first six months of this year alone, the figure soared to US$13.6 million. The business communities of the two countries have many opportunities to cooperate, especially when both Vietnam and Uruguay are actively integrating into their regions and the world. Loc emphasized that the business cooperation enhancement will not only benefit the two economies themselves, but also benefit regional markets such as AFTA, Mercosur, Southeast Asia and Latin America.
