Dung Quat Economic Zone (EZ) in central Quang Ngai province has to date licensed 144 projects and approved in principle 49 projects totaling US$10.5 billion, Head of the EZ’s management board Tran Le Trung said.

Big projects include an oil refinery invested a US$3 billion steel project by the Tycoons Worldwide Steel company and a US$2.5 billion project by the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam).

Other projects comprise of Vinashin’s US$400-million shipyard, a US$260-million plant by the Doosan-Vietnam Heavy Industry Ltd. Co., and a US$200-million polypropylene factory by the PetroVietnam.

So far, 43 projects have come into operation in the EZ, generating 10,000 jobs with two-thirds being local people, Trung said.

He added that EZ will need some 31,000 workers for various industries, especially mechanics by 2010.

To meet the skilled labor demand, the provincial People’s Committee has approved a VND212-billion program to train 29,000 skilled workers for Dung Quat EZ in the 2008-2010 period.

Separately, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has recently approved a general plan on the development of fast-growing Dung Quat EZ up to 2020, aiming to turn it into a central region’s urban-industrial-service center in the near future.

Under the plan, the 10,300-ha Dung Quat will be developed into a multi-sector EZ covering the areas of industry, trade, tourism, services, urban areas and agro-forestry-fishery business, with oil refinement and petro-chemistry being its spearhead sectors. (Vietnam Economic Times)
