Holland’s Ambassador to Vietnam André Hospels and Chairman of the Rotterdam Port Promotion Council Wim Van Sluis are working with authorities of Vietnamese central Danang province to develop deep water seaports.

They are discussing plans in the next five years so that big ships can travel from Danang to Rotterdam, through which more than 50 per cent of Vietnam’s exports are put through, the Vietnam News Agency noted without any information about investment figure and other detail.

Vietnam now has 266 seaports handling more than 80 per cent of the total imports and exports. Nine ports could be upgraded to handle 50,000 DWT cargo ships or 3,000 TEU container ships.

The country is estimated to need US$5 billion to build and upgrade its seaport systems from now to 2010, aiming to handle 250 million tons of cargo in 2010 and 550 million tons in 2020. (VNA, www.vpa.org.vn))
