Thousands of Companies Join Garment Industry Expo 2008

Thousands of domestic companies participated in an international textile and garment industry expo which opened in Ho Chi Minh City April 9, Vietnam News Agency reported.
 
The four-day event witnessed the participation of close to 400 companies from 27 countries and territories worldwide, including China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Idia, Japan, Canada and Australia, up 50 per cent compared to the last year.
 
The exhibitors are showcasing machinery, materials and accessories for garment and textile manufacturing and processing at 550 booths covering over 12,000 square meters.
 
The 18th Expo is part of the trade promotion program of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association Vitas.
 
At the opening ceremony, Deputy of Industry and Trade Bui Xuan Khu, said this is a very good opportunity for local textile and garment businesses to seek partners and absorb advanced technology from foreign firms.
 
He added that big deals would be signed between domestic and foreign companies at the exhibition.
 
According to the Chairman of the Vietnam Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex), Le Quoc An, Vietnam obtained US$7.8 billion from garment exports last year, becoming the world’s ninth largest garment exporter and the third biggest garment exporter to the U.S.
 
The Southeast Asian country targets to export US$9.5 billion worth of textile and garment products this year.
 
Hoang Van Vung, Vice Chairman of VCCI, said the garment and sector had created jobs for more than 2 million people, contributing 15 per cent of the country’s export turnover. (VNA)
