Vietnam is gradually cutting coal export volume and will stop outbound coal shipments before 2015 in order to serve increasing domestic demand for the mineral, the Quan Doi Nhan Dan newspaper reported.

In the first four months this year, the country exported an estimated of 8.62 million tons of coal, down 20.7 per cent on-year, earning US$421 million, a rise of 28 per cent on-year.

Vietnam’s demand for coal will sharply increase in the near future as the country will put into operation several coal-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 6,000 megawatts by 2011.

Currently, Vietnam is taking drastic measures to fight illegal coal exports to China and will stop illegal coal shipments to the neighboring country by June 1. (People’s Army, GSO April 2008)
