Pepper Export Prices Hit New High
Export prices of pepper reached new high on May 15 due to low supplies but high demands on the world market, the Vietnam Agriculture reported.
On May 15, pepper prices suddenly rose by US$160 a ton from a day earlier, to between US$3,260 and US$3,460 a ton of black pepper; and US$5,150 a ton of white pepper, the newspaper said.
The export price hike pulled up buying prices of pepper at local market. In Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau, the biggest pepper producers in Vietnam, pepper was selling for VND50,500 a kilo, up from VND48,500 a kilo against May 14.
Vietnam exported 24,000 tons of pepper in the first four months of 2008, raking in US$84 million, down 14.2 per cent on year in volume but up 12.4 per cent in value, the General Statistics Office reported.
According to the Vietnam Pepper Association, the country will continue to be the world largest pepper exporter this year, with total output ranging from 90,000 to 100,000 tons. (Vietnam Agriculture)
